University of Canterbury – GSHP Upgrade

Client: University of Canterbury
Main Contractor: HRS Construction
Design Engineer: Stantec / Cosgroves
Mechanical Contractor: DBC Building Services Ltd
Year Built:

The GSHP system consists of three units that provide both heating and cooling. In winter, plate heat exchangers are used to enhance heat pump efficiency by creating a dummy chilled water load. In summer, the primary focus is on producing chilled water.

The artesian system includes two artesian wells for water supply and two for reinjection, all connected to the GSHP Plantroom, supporting two of the three heat pumps. Additional heat exchangers in basements increase heat exchange capacity.

The system design prioritizes efficiency, with safety measures in place for the refrigerant R1234ze. DBC Building Services Ltd is responsible for the installation of the new mechanical systems, and AirRated® is handling commissioning management and services for the project.
